Sicily's wine-growing traditions are ancient and date back to the Phoenicians, Romans, Greeks and Arabs. Sicily boasts numerous indigenous grape varieties such as frappato, nero d'Avola, inzolia, catarratto, nerello mascalese and nerello cappuccio, malvasia delle Lipari and moscato d'Alessandria (zibibbo, from the Arabic zibib meaning 'a raisin'). Based on the type of grape, we can understand the cultivation area of the various vines mentioned above: Muscat wines, Moscato di Siracusa and Moscato di Noto we find them in the Syracuse area Wines based on Nero d'Avola, Frappato and Ceraselo di Vittoria DOCG are produced in the province of Ragusa Grillo, Grecanico, Catarratto and Inzolia vines are the protagonists of the Alcamo DOC La Malvasia delle Lipari famous Aeolian Islands in the Messina area On the slopes of Etna, considered 'an island within an island' due to the characteristic lava soil and the microclimate that characterises this area, we find Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, for red, rosé and sparkling wines and Catarratto and Carricante for white wines. From these vines are produced the famous Etna DOC. The province of Caltanissetta is home to one of Sicily's most recent DOCs, the Riesi Marsala is a historic DOC that takes its name from the municipality of the same name in the province of Trapani. GrapesNero d'Avola. Soil and climateAltitude 120-150 metres above sea level; gently sloping terrain; sandy soils interspersed with tuff substrate calcareous and medium-textured soils; pH 7.7, total limestone 21%. The climate is warm temperate, mitigated in the summer by a breeze coming in from the sea, as well as good temperature excursions between day and night. Vineyard: Vertical trellising with spurred cordon pruning, leaving 6 to 10 buds per plant. Plant density 4,000-4,500 plants per hectare; yield 70-80 quintals per hectare. Vintage: At Acate, in the Vittoria Estate, the 2021 vintage was low in rainfall* (282 mm compared to the average of 410 mm). The lower rainfall recorded was compensated for by irrigation that favoured the regular vegetative-productive cycle. The quantity and quality of the grapes produced was in line with the company's objectives. The Nero d'Avola grapes thus reached ideal sugar, aromatic and phenolic ripeness, the premise for wines of particular fragrance and pleasantness. Harvest: The Nero d'Avola grapes were harvested between mid to late September. Vinification and ageing: Fermentation is carried out in steel with maceration on the skins for about 10 days at a temperature of 25-28°C. Once malolactic fermentation has taken place, maturation follows for about 8 months in tanks and then in bottles for at least 9 months. Tasting notes: Ruby red in colour, Contesa dei Venti 2021 is characterised by floral hints of lavender. The fragrant bouquet is enriched with notes of red fruits (cherry and raspberry) together with hints of spices (sage and black pepper) and balsamic juniper. In the mouth it is fresh and harmonious, with a pleasant return of the fruity notes and soft, enveloping tannins; the finish is persistent and elegant. LongevityBest enjoyed over 4-5 years. Designer labels: A label with intense colours that speak of red plums and lavender. A woman, the Contesa dei Venti, who looks far away, being caressed and playing gently with the wind. The name of this wine is inspired by the pleasant breeze that is always present in the Vittoria area and blows through the bunches of Nero d'Avola grapes by night as well as by day. At the table: Perfect to drink by the glass, it goes well with vegetables and grilled meats, cured meats and tasty, lightly spiced fish dishes; try it with tuna sushi.
