He was known for his images of political and social satire. She became a symbolic figure during the time of the Mexican Revolution. La Catrina is often associated with Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a pre-Colombian Meso-American observace of death and life that is celebrated on November 2nd in all of Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula and parts of Central America. La Catrina in her elegance broad-brimmed hat first appeared in a satirical engraving that mocked those who pretended to be of a higher class, even if that meant starving, and going painfully thin, or without flesh. To this day, La Catrina continues to be a symbolic figure.
